<pre wrap="">I am trying to open DWG drawings on my Ubuntu, but the online solutions are
problematic to say the least, either to run it under Wine which doesn't work
for me - the drawings don't show up (they do show up on Windows)
Anyone knows a native solution to open DWG? I can't find any beside the
OpenDWG project that doesn't appear to offer any programs for Linux.

First things first, Noam. Writeto Autodesk and let them know that
there is demand for AutoCAD under Linux. If we don't start letting
these compaines know that we are here and want their product, then we
will forever be chasing somebody else's tail.
Here is their contact page:

I'd add that while AutoCAD's DWG format is proprietary, and very
closely protected, AutoDESK has shown some move towards FOSS in
releasing their web map server, Mapguide Open Source as a fully open
source project. Furthermore, AutoDesk is a major contributor to the
foundation known as OSGeo (<a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="http://www.osgeo.org">www.osgeo.org</a>) which promotes open source
GIS software, maintains an "incubation" process for new FOSS GIS
projects, and certifies mature projects.<br>
<br>
Having said that, I'm aware of one (proprietary) software for Linux
that handles dwg files: Varicad. AFAIK it's similar in features to
"AutoCAD Lite" and costs much less. QCAD, the FOSS CAD software reads
and writes only dxf (as you probably already found). OpenDWG is pretty
far behind - it supports only DWG 2000 and older formats, and it's a
library that needs to be used by some other software. <br>
