</div>FWIW, it looks like the specific server is borked in some weird way. On<br>
a different Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 LTS (that I installed myself rather than<br>
inherited, huh) everything works.<br>

I have not figured out what the matter is on the problematic<br>
server. Purged everything tex-related, apt-get autoremove, apt-get<br>
clean, reinstalled tex - still no dice. Compared the lists of packages<br>
and the /etc files that looked relevant on the two servers - nothing<br>
blindingly obvious popped out of the background.<br>

If anyone has seen anything similar or has an idea what else to check,<br>
please let me know. If not, feel free to disregard.<br></blockquote><div>I don't know anything about tex but could it be that when it was 'borked' it created some personalized config files in your homedir that are still affecting you because you only purged general config?<br>
