[RBS] US drivers license renewal info please?

I got a form telling me I have to go to my "local" office to renew my
Michigan driver's license, that I can't do it by mail again this year. Since
I have no plans to be in the US in the next who knows how long, any
suggestion as to how to get that waived ?  The office in the capital of
Michigan said the only extensions are for 6 months..

 Has anyone gotten any other info or done it? And if so , how?
