We are delighted that the Jewish Eye made the groundbreaking decision to include a "women-only" film in their festival, setting a new precedent in Israel and building a bridge, through art, between people from diverse religious backgrounds.

The festival will take place at the cinematheque of the International Conference Center of the Ashkelon Academic College, which has allowed the Jewish Eye to use its luxurious halls and state-of-the-art cinema equipment.

A Light for Greytowers tells the Victorian-era saga of a Russian Jewish girl, abandoned to an English orphanage and at the mercy of its tyrannical matron.  Based on the much-loved young adult novel by the same name, Greytowers is a work of art from a community that, until now, has not had a cinematic voice. The film captures the emerging new voice of contemporary religious women and girls who choose to observe the Jewish laws of modesty and, therefore, do not sing or dance in the presence of men.

To date, nearly 30,000 women and girls have laughed and cried together at screenings in communities around the world. The film’s universal themes--such as the strength and confidence mothers can instill in their children through faith and perseverance, despite adversity--powerfully resonate with people from all backgrounds.   Los Angeles Times columnist Sandy Banks (who is not Jewish) called the film “entertaining and uplifting…giving mothers a reprieve from having to explain teen pop stars’ drunk-driving arrests and pregnancies.”

Filmmaker Robin Saex Garbose, a graduate of BrownUniversity, directed some 45 plays at theatres including Ensemble Studio Theatre, Jewish Repertory Theater, Naked Angels and the JuilliardTheatreCenter. She has directed such noted actors as Laura Linney, Jon Tenney, Peter Riegert, Helen Slater, Fisher Stevens, RickiLake, Jason Alexander, Gina Gershon, Judd Nelson and the late Bruno Kirby. Television credits include America’s Most Wanted and Head of the Class. She co-wrote the screenplay The Spark, about a Jewish girl’s search for faith, which was selected for the Sundance Institute Writers Lab.

Ten years ago, Robin founded the groundbreaking Kol Neshama Performing Arts Conservatory, as an effort to provide professional artistic training and performance opportunities for Jewish girls and womenin a setting that integrates modest dress, kosher food and religious values.  A Light for Greytowers is a culmination, thus far, of Kol Neshama's innovative efforts.

Robin lives in Los Angeleswith her husband and producing/writing partner, Levi Yitzhaq, and their children.  A Light for Greytowers, which is now in worldwide non-theatrical distribution, is her first of, IY"H, many more!
