A Fundraiser Lecture Series by Professor Stefan Reif
The Cairo Genizah - Exciting New Discoveries

Prof. Stefan Reif is the Founding Director of a Research Unit devoted to the Taylor-Schechter Geniza Collection – a repository of 190,000 manuscript fragments that serve as an unparalleled resource for the academic study of Judaism, Jewish history and the wider economic and social world of the Middle Ages. Consisting of documents written from about 870 AD to the late 19th century, the Collection is by far the largest group of manuscripts rescued from Cairo’s Ben Ezra synagogue by Solomon Schechter in 1897.

The Benjamin Children’s Library is honored to host Prof. Reif for a series of
three lectures describing the Geniza’s dramatic re-discovery.
The lectures – which will be given in English and are open to the public –
will all take place at 8:30pm, and will raise much-needed money for the
Library’s operating expenses.
The cost for the entire series is 75 NIS per person.

Prof. Reif’s first lecture, scheduled for Tuesday November 15th, will focus on
how the Geniza was discovered late in the nineteenth century, and how it has
been studied by scholars since then. It will explain the adventures and motivations
of those Jewish and non-Jewish religious leaders, travelers, and antiquity dealers
who brought the manuscripts from Cairo to Western academic institutions.

The theme of lecture number two, on Sunday, December 11th, will be the Jewish
literature found among the Geniza documents. Prof. Reif will give a behind-the-scenes
account of how the Geniza restored lost works to the Jewish canon, and uncovered
previously unknown works such as the Wisdom of Ben Sira which dates from the
second century BCE. Prof. Reif’s lecture will focus on Biblical and Rabbinic texts,
as well as prayers and poetry, while revealing some remarkable surprises about famous Jewish personalities.

The final lecture, on Wednesday, January 25th, will concern “the literature of daily life”.
How did Jews, men and women, make a living? Did they travel much? In what way were
they affected by the Crusades? Is it true that women had little power, especially in matters
of marriage and divorce? Do we know how children studied? Kashrut, medicine and music
will also be briefly discussed.
