Due to recent events it has been suggested to speak to our children and
especially the girls about safety at night and walking home in agroup and
not alone. I spoke to my daughters as suggested and an interesting comment
was made by them. My daughter said to me that instead of just talking to
the girls maybe people should speak to their sons as well. When i asked her
why she explained to me that after bnei akiva peulot on friday night and
during the week or any kind of social meeting, when the girls ask the boys
to walk them home many agree happily but it seems that there are quite a
few who also make faces and are quite clear that they are not interested in
helping out and would prefer to be left alone.

As a family who lives on the end of aviv (yasmin) it is not easy for my
kids to find people who just happen to be walking home at the same time so
that they can join them. I think that it would be helpful for all of us no
matter where we live, if parents explained
to their sons as well the importance of joining in the effort of making it
safe for all to walk. I understand that sometimes it takes them a bit out
of their way but if they get a friend to join them it is not so bad and
they are allowing their female friends to make it home safely and without
the guilt of having to ask and cajole them into it. Without the girls
having to be made to feel guilty for asking for this extra help it would be
nice if the boys would understand that they could offer or even pre arrange
amongst them who can walk which girls home.

Just a thought i thought worth mentioning
