"A HERO IN HEAVEN"
Michael Levin (z"l) was one of three soldiers killed on August 1, 2006 in 
clashes with Hezbullah in the southern Lebanese village of Aita al-Shaab. An 
immigrant from the United States, he had been living in Israel for the last 
four years.
Born and raised near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Michael grew up in a 
traditional, loving Jewish household. He was active in HaGesher Region USY 
and attending Camp Ramah in the Poconos. In February of 2001, Michael came 
to Israel for two months and attended the Alexander Muss high school 
program. After graduating high school, Michael attended the NATIV USY year 
long program in Israel. In his NATIV yearbook he wrote:
"You can't fulfill your dreams unless you dare to risk it all"
At the young age of 16, Michael had decided that he wanted to move to Israel 
and join a front-line combat unit in the Israeli Defense Forces. He followed 
his dream three years later, and immigrated to Israel, joining the elite 
paratroop unit #890 shortly thereafter. He spent some time living at Kibbutz 
Yavneh, and then moved to an apartment in Jerusalem, which he shared with 
two other soldiers.

This summer Michael had received special permission to travel to the United 
States to visit his family. When he heard about the outbreak of the war, he 
decided to end his trip and return to help his unit. He went straight to his 
commanders and demanded to be sent up north to defend Israel against 
Hezbollah. Seven days later he was killed.

On Tisha B'Av, Michael Levin (z”l) was laid to rest at Mount Hertzl 
Cemetery. His family – mother Harriet, father Mark, sister Elisa and his 
twin sister, Dara -- flew in from Holland, Pennsylvania. They were joined by 
thousands of people from all over Israel who came to pay tribute to his 
memory, his heroism.

Michael Levin (z”l) was the personification of the word ‘hero”.  He made the 
ultimate sacrifice for the Jewish State and the Jewish people.

A short film documentary has been produced to honor the memory of Michael 
Levin (z"l). This documentary, 'A Hero in Heaven', is endorsed by the Levin 
family, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and the Jewish 
National Fund. The film tells of Michael's devotion to his family, his 
people and Eretz Yisrael in a unique and powerful way... through the music 
of Naomi Shemer, the songs of Rachel, the poems of Shaul Tchernokovsky and 
the words of Michael's family, friends and fellow soldiers who loved him 
dearly. The film is approximately 45 minutes in length. Because of the 
plethora of lessons that can be taught from the footage, it was decided by 
the Levin family to have a curriculum accompany this film. The curriculum 
was expertly written by Jewish educator Yossi Katz of the Alexander Muss 
High School in Israel (AMHSI). A Hero in Heaven is currently being 
distributed for educational purposes only. It is currently not available for 
individual use.
