some months ago, i posted questions on how to properly file file a us tax return and exempt ss from taxation.
i filed online, per the irs website, using online tax, which is the only provider to support irs form 8833, which is used to claim benefits under the us-israel tax treaty, and is free if your agi is under $57,000.
no problem.
but in july, i got a bill from our friendly irs demanding $7467 in back taxes, interest, and penalties.
so, i wrote a not so friendly letter to them explaining 1. i'm an oleh and exempt from ss taxation and had included form 8833 for me and my wife, and 2. my filing date is june 15, not april 15 since i'm overseas.
got a bill back for $23.17, which was legitimate, since not using turbotax for the first time, i inadvertently omitted a small state tax refund.
bottom line, if you have a simple tax situation, you can do it yourself and probably at no charge.
obviously, if your return is complicated, hiring a competent cpa would be advisable.
