You are free to argue with Matan on whether this message was on topic to
this list or not. I lean toward Matan's point on view, but I do not feel
strongly about it. What I do feel strongly about is posting links to
outside sources, particularly your own, with no indication of who might
be interested in the content of the link. This is a classic "teaser"
technique, and I fail to see what purpose it serves beside driving
people who would not, otherwise, click on the link to do so. To me,
that's dishonest.

If you found Shlomi's post interesting, that's good for the both of you.
It does not excuse the fact that I, who did not, had to click the link
to find out what it was about.

No. Shlomi's motivation for both the post AND for not putting in an
abstract was to make more people view his opinions/story. Generating
traffic is EXACTLY what he was after. I own a blog too, as, I'm sure,
many other regular participants of the mailing list. Shlomi's is the
only one who gets a regular "hey, look what I just did" mails here. If
everyone who owned a blog treated Linux-IL as an RSS replacement, the
list would contain little else, and would probably die in less than a
month. Still, so long as it's only Shlomi, that had been acceptable so
long as he is not using dishonest techniques to generate his traffic.

People want to generate traffic for more than just financial incentives.
That does not mean you are free to monopolize community resources in
order to do so. If Shlomi gains enough money from AdSense to retire
early to a privately owned Carabean island, I'll be more than happy for
him. All I'm asking is that he plays fair, and not litter where I (and
others) eat.
