Firefox 3 - random crashes

I would check to see what Add ons you have installed. I suspect that you have an Add On or Plugin that is not compatible. 

I have these and they are OK:

Sifrei Kodesh Search, Tanach Mishneh etc (Nice Add On that works great!) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2820

Download a new version and install it. In the past this is how I got over the problem. Also some Cookies are so friendly that they do damage also.
