problem with xls files to read in open office

Indeed it looks like xml file. but on the web site they publish excel xls
file and it is saved on the hd as xls.

I have open office 3.0 at home and it couldn't read it normally. The
portable openoffice that I use now is 3.0.0 and it doesn't read it normally
unless i use the workaround mentioned above.I will definitely check the
wiki. I wonder if the new version of 3.1 does solve the problem. Yet, I do
believe that at least they should create real xls so that sorting and all
other calculation can be done properly.
