Xubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce desktop environment.
Minimum system requirements
You need 192 MB RAM to run the Live CD or 128 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM at install time.
To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.
Once installed, Xubuntu can run with starting from 192 (or even just
128) MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 256 MB RAM.

I was contacted by someone, who has an old laptop with 192MB memory, and
wants to install Linux (Ubuntu 9.04) on it.
I advised him to first upgrade the memory to at least 512MB.
However, as an alternative to upgrading the laptop, I'd like to know if
and which distributions and desktops being actively maintained are
economical in memory usage yet provide X-Window in some form.
Thanks,

My Commodore 64 is suffering from slowness and insufficiency of memory;
and its display device is grievously short of pixels. Can anyone help?
