If you don't know something or are not very good at it, the last place
you want to learn is at a customer who pays by the hour. Do a job on
your own as a demo and learning platform, or even better a pro-bono
(free to a good cause) job.
As for the rates Sammy mentioned, note that if you go through an
agency or headhunter, that will be the rate they charge, and you get a
cut of that. How much depends upon what you expect with the money, if
you are paid between jobs, etc.
