I now tried going to the following URL in firefox:
http://mirror.isoc.org.il/pub/mandriva/devel/cooker/i586/media/main/release/
and I got the same problem, which seemed even worse than with ftp:// - Firefox
stalled for many seconds when loading the page. So it seems like a more
general problem with the browsers on my system.
