I use Gandi (gandi.net) and have done so for almost 6 years. Ok so
they're not $5/year but I've never had any cause for complaint.
If your domain expires, it is held for a month in a state where it can be
undeleted, and then it is released back to the community. My
understanding is that during this month period of limbo, it can be
restored at the usual renewal rate, but until it is, you won't actually be
able to use it.
Seems fair to me.
Having deliberately let a domain expire, I can confirm that it now
appears to be available to anyone who wants it.
