For any post, you can set whether it's public or private to specific,
user-defined, group.
You can also opt-out of buzz altogether.

That's the main point, IMO. Not that I expect these particular example
to happen but the point is that they introduce new tools into existing
services and enable them by default in order to generate the traffic,
and against that your only real option is to leave the service.
I don't know whether it'll help your privacy, but maybe sticking to
accessing GMail through IMAP could help.
Personally, I like the new toy and already use it (and feel I benefit
from it) in earnest.
