OK, puzzle solved. I only use Gmail with my own domain, not as a
gmail.com user. I scratched my head and logged on with my
long-forgotten gmail.com username (which I had to create just to set
my domain up), and voila - Buzz appeared (and was immediately turned
off).

Apparently, if you use your own domain they don't molest you.
