On a second thought, Another guess I could make: maybe previously you had
some sort of NFS authentication in place. Has your wife been auth'd to the
NFS server, she would not be anonymous and thus not be mapped to the
anonymous user...

However that is a _guess_, and if it's true, then the manual is bad. As it
says: 'Map _all uids_ and gids to the anonymous user'. I don't see a
distinction here between auth'd and not-auth'd.
