I just started playing with DD-WRT on a borrowed D-Link WRT54GL in
order to connect my living room appliances to the modem on the other
side of the unit (the appliances support only wired Ethernet, I want
to bridge them to the modem/ap without having to run a network cable
across the unit). It offers a "bridge" mode which sounds like exactly
what you are after.

I got DD-WRT installed but am still struggling with the configuration
(it doesn't let me change anything), so I can't offer much concrete
assistance except that if you go down the DD-WRT path then read
carefully ALL they have to say (the FAQ, the "Peacock Thread", the
wiki etc), follow the advise carefully, be extra careful with which
firmware you choose, don't assume that "latest is always greatest". Be
prepared with lots of patience to wade through unedited advise and
warnings.

Otherwise, maybe try Ethernet-over-power solutions like
http://www.netcomm.com.au/products/ethernet-over-power, I was warned
by one guy (without personal experience) that they don't always work
and could depend on quality of the wiring in your house (though
nothing about such limitations in mentioned anywhere in the official
material as far as I read), so make sure you don't lose if it doesn't
work (read - can get your money back). Personally I got the impression
that a good Wireless-N 300mbps will deliver better but this isn't
based on personal experience.

Cheers,
