You must insert the RLM *after* the period.

Nope. RLM doesn't work for me. If I am at the end of a line, and I insert 
a 
RLM, and then a period, the period gets inserted at the beginning of the 
line, not the end. If I insert a RLE, the period gets inserted at the end 
of the line.
