Fwd: Idea: "Hacking-IL" (tentative name) - a forum for Israelis working together on FOSS

Hi everyone,

(this is an English translation of a message I sent to
discussions at hamakor.org.il).

Lately, I've started to think that while there are many active contributors in
the community of contributors to open-source in Israel, there is a tendenacy
of the various developers (who are not necessarily programmers, of course) and
the various communities and projects in which they take part, not to cooperate
nor share knowledge, and resources with the developers of the other
communities. So I've been thinking maybe we should create a forum (I would
prefer a mailing list naturally, but a web forum or a forum that combines both
will also be good), where everyone will talk to each other and to get more
contributors to the projects we are involved in, work together on such
projects, etc.

When Chen (Shapira) created the Hackers-IL mailing list, she said that she
intended that we will work together on hacks. In time, the focus of the list
turned out as prefering philosophical discussions about software, software
development, and sometimes also science in general, and discussions of
developing FOSS (free and open source software) together were frowned upon.
There were other attempts to set up a community of Israeli open source
develoeprs such as Ivrix (which was dedicated to providing good support of
Hebrew in Linux), and someone else once told me that he wanted to set up
something like that following Ivrix, but as far as I know not a lot came out
of it.

In any case, what do you think about this idea? Like I said, the name
"Hacking-IL" is a tentative name, and the main problems with it was that
people who are not knowledgable and inside the community enough may be led to
believe that we are talking about intruding to computers or compromising
software systems, which proved to be a problem with Hackers-IL up to a point.

Regards,

	Shlomi Fish
