What to tell 13 year old kids about Linux and Open Source?

I'd say maybe to stress the idea of customization.
Since the source is open, you can make it do whatever you want.
Kids (especially teenagers) are really into stamping their own personal mark
on the world around them. With open source software (and the skills) they
can do that.
Then of course there's the "The program doesn't do *exactly* what I want, so
I'll tweak it until it does" issue which might appeal to them.
