No, what started was that he made some inaccurate statments about the  
Israeli occupation of "Palestine" and asked that Linux Mint not be  
used in Israel or by Israeli's.

It had AFAIK nothing to do with any joke, fortune, etc. It was an  
outright request.

By comparison it would be like RMS asking that no one in Israel or any  
Israeli use any GNU software (which he has not).
