Automatic crop and rotate scans?

I have to admit I didn't try this brilliant (but should have been obvious...)
idea. I always assumed that scanners have some sort of margin which they
cannot scan, so I always kept the scanned object away from the corner... But
now that I actually checked, I see that it seems that while my scanner does
have such a margin (of about 5mm) on one side, on the other side it gives a
full scan.
So I'll definitely use your idea! I should have thought about it myself :(
I guess when one is so used to looking for software and algorithms, one
sometimes overlooks the obvious "physical" solution...
