If you look for stability, and you can stand its old age, I'd recommend kernel 
version 2.6.32. This version is the base for enterprise versions of both 
RedHat and SuSE distributions, as well as Debian and Ubuntu LTS. The -longterm 
kernel branch maintains v2.6.32 (now at v2.6.32.48, from last week), and will 
continue to do so for at least a few years to come.
