Connecting Linux to a Windows network with router

A family member wants to replace his Windows XP Professional computer
with a Kubuntu machine (different hardware). He connects to the
internet via Hot infrastructure and his work is the ISP. His work
apparently validates his machine for connection by checking the
Windows license key. Is anybody here familiar with this technique? Can
a router be used to forge this?

An additional solution might be to leave the current Windows XP box
connected to one port on the router and have the Ubuntu machine
connected to another port. Can this validation be delegated out to the
Windows box, maybe with MAC address forgery by the router and a DMZ?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
