I remember checking the relevant RFCs a couple of years ago (I had a
reason) to find out that the "protocol" part of a URL (i.e., http://)
was in fact the only one actually required as far as standard
compliance is concerned. I am too lazy to find the actual RFC for your
convenience, but I am sure it won't be a problem for anyone who is
interested enough.
