OK - I continued playing around and discovered a solution (although I'm not 
sure I understand why it works).

Instead of smb://10.0.0.138 or smb://10.0.0.1 I tried 
smb://user@10.0.0.138 and smb://user@10.0.0.1 and now I'm not being asked for 
a password.
BTW - the same works for my xtreamer which also has an IP address on the 
network.
