I can answer about subtitles with kodi. I find it easier to read subtitles than to listen to dialog so I have mine setup so that if there isn't a subtitle file already for the tv show/movie it pauses the show ~1 second in and queries "the internets" for a subtitle file in my chosen language and lets me choose between the ones listed.

for chromecast, I haven't figured out how to change the default audio of a file. This sometimes leads to spanish audio or directors' commentary instead of the english audio from the movie.
