                                                     áñ"ã
Menu is after the Dvar Torah.

"àðëé ä' àìå÷ê àùø äåöàúéê îàøõ îöøéí" -- The Almighty established éöéàú îöøéí as the foundation of our Faith. The îôøùéí explain why ä÷á"ä did not instead begin with Creation of the Universe as the basis for Faith: Creation is a distant, philosophical issue. In contrast, éöéàú îöøéí is something we experienced directly. Conclusion: Jewish values must be anchored in down-to-earth, common sense experience.

This may not be as simple as it sounds. The common sense we want is our own, true, inner common sense -- not the sense imposed on us by superficial or external influences. Often, we fail to apply common sense because of habit, personal bias or automatic acceptance of social norms. Here's an example.

Say you get sinus infections 3-4 times each year, in addition to persistent heartburn and other digestive discomfort. You go to the doctor and he/she prescribes antibiotic for the sinusitis and antacid for the heartburn. Although you've been repeating this dance for 5 or more years running, the doctor still gives you essentially the same prescription. There are small differences. Since the heartburn is getting progressively worse, the antacid is now much stronger and requires a prescription. You still get the same, "Not to worry; millions of people have this condition. We just knock it out and you can carry right on." You buy the prescription, take the stuff, the symptoms are relieved, and indeed you carry on. Perhaps you're feeling more tired lately. Elimination isn't as comfortable as it once was. But that's just normal aging right? Even though I'm only 38?

Question: Are you behaving in accordance with common sense? Does it make plain sense to assume that a condition of illness that keeps coming back, and gets worse each time, should be treated solely by anesthitizing the symptoms? You're a thinking person. How about insisting that your doctor give you an answer to this question -- WHY am I getting these repeated illnesses? Doctor says -- "there's no 'reason'; it happens to everybody" -- ? Does that sound like common sense? It's easy to have your common sense fail when it runs counter to a venerated social institution such as "the Doctor said", or when it goes against what all your friends think (or rather, what you think they think). Unfortunately, people often stay with their 'non'-common sense until something shakes them out of it, such as a close brush with serious illness, their own or that of someone close to them.

At Health Choice, we provide food that won't reduce your life span -- according to common sense. For more info on diet that maximizes health, and especially Torah perspective on this topic, visit http://sites.google.com/site/HealthChoiceCuisine
