Could not agree more with Pinchas.  I will refrain from commenting what happens at kiddushes.

In South Africa, the kids used to go Sukkah hopping, sit down to have a drink and a cookie and off they went.

Subject: [RBS] my very personal opinion re: sukka hopping

Dear Listers,
1. I usually don't like to participate in such list-discussions, but I feel
so strongly about this issue that I'll make an exception on this one.
I can't agree more w/ Phil and Chanie, and in fact will be much more
vehement in my opinion.
2.There is no difference btw a child running around different sukkot for the
sole purpose of collecting food, be it healthy or junk, and then putting it
in a bag to take home,  than the same child attending a Kiddush, and jamming
his plate overflowing w/ ridiculous amounts  of food, while totally
disregarding how much food was put out at all, or how much food is left for
all the other people at the Kiddush.
3. In both cases, it's totally egotistical behavior where the child is
thinking only of himself and his own physical desires, and even "collecting"
way beyond those desires. As parents we would comment on such behavior in
our own home; kal v'homer our children shouldn't be acting this way in
public.
4. In both  cases, the "collector's" parents are guilty of terrible hinuch
l'mitzvot, and of terrible hinuch l'midot tovot.
In both cases, if you condone/allow such behavior in your own succa, you're
participating in the error, and allowing it to happen under your auspices.
5. The beautiful idea of succa-hopping, which was originally meant to teach
young children to experience ahdut, to learn how different people make up
different sukkot halachically/artistically, to sing, and to share divrei
tora, -- like many other things -- can become [in some cases] a monstrosity,
perverted to the point where the "kibbud" which was meant to make it
nice/fun and an opportunity to make a bracha has become the ikkar. In any
matter of Judaism where the tafel has become the ikar, watch out. It's
Aveira Time. And worse, it's probably Middos Perversion Time. That's
especially true when we're talking about something that isn't even a mitzva.
6. If your child plans to walk out of your house w/ a bag, then it's your
job as a parent to sit him down and explain the beautiful ideas of
succa-hopping, where it's at, and why he shouldn't take a bag. If not, don't
let him go at all. Better she/he should stay home with you for quality time.
7. I think Phil and  Chanie should do exactly what they're planning to.
That's their hinuch obligation to their own children, to teach them one
aspect of how to run a Jewish Home. If the child doesn't understand it
today, he will in a few years. Who ever said that the Right Thing is "fun"
or popular?
8. This is the kind of issue where the child must be supported emotionally
and ideationally vs. the "social pressure". Push back in the other
direction. If you don’t, you will be run over, regarding your own child's
hinuch.
8. As for the other children, who cares if they don't like it? That's their
[parent's] problem. If maybe other children will learn something from the
Rosenfelder's succa about good behavior that they're not learning at home or
in other succas, that's just an extra to the Rosenfelder's credit.
9. Hag Sameach to all.

Subject: [RBS] another subject for discussion : sukka hopping

our children find it very hard to be told that they may not take bags with
them to fill up on goodies while sukka hopping.
and kids who visit our sukka are disappointed when we offer fruit and
something that has a limit of oen per kid AND that we ask them to say their
berachot and eat in our sukka

does anyone else feel that sukka hopping has become more like trick or
treating?

on the other hand, do people feel that children should be allowed to take
home as much as they can grab from each sukka?

personally, id' like to say that minhag ir hakodesh Beit Shemesh is
that sukka hoppers eat or drink something in each sukka they visit, share
divrei torah or play a game or sing a song, but  do  NOT take food / treats
home -  no loot bags, no trick or treating

what do others think?
