Can I use 32bit shared libraries on a 64bit machine?

Sorry about the newbie question. Our sysadmin is going abroad for the holidays, and I have to cover for him. Sort of. Well, I need to be able to connect to our office using Checkpoint SNX. But the version I was given is looking for libpam.so.0, I assume the 32 bit version, and doesn't find the /lib64/libpam.so.0 I have.
Should I install the 32 bit version of pam? Or is that going to have ill effects on my system? Or maybe I should just add /lib64 to LD_LIBRARY_PATH or something?
(My machine is Mandriva 2010.0)
Thanks,
Herouth
