Fedora upgrade, got unbootable system

Looking in dmesg output for the first error messages shows:

udevd[69]: bind failed: Address is already in use
udevd[69]: error binding udev control socket
systemd[1]: udev.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1
:
systemd[1]: udev.service holdoff time over, scheduling restart.
systemd[1]: Unit udev.service entered failed state.
systemd[1]: udev.service start request repeated too quickly, refusing to
start
:
modprobe[133]: FATAL: Could not load
/lib/modules/3.3.1-3.fc16.i686/modules.dep: No such file or directory
mount[95]: mount: unknown filesystem type 'binfmt_misc'

Checking /lib/modules/3.3* shows that it indeed does not contain any
modules.dep file. Should it? Is there perhaps a change to Linux 3.3 so it
no longer uses that file?

To be continued...
