As nobody gave a better answer:
AFAIK, there are standard AT commands for that. Thus you should give a
shot to e.g. gnokii.

Just for fun: my phone (N900, in "PC Suite" mode) using AT commands.
# screen /dev/ttyACM0 115200
(in screen)
AT+CPBS="ME"
ERROR
AT+CPBS+
ERROR
AT+CPBS?
ERROR
I guess it's not that standard.
